Glossary

Blog
Short for web log, is a journal presented in a web-based format.  Blogs allow the reader or audience to be able to post comments on each article entry.  Many blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject; others function more as personal online diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic.

CISSP
Certified Information System Security Professional, a globally recognized standard of achievement accredited to ISO Standard.

CMS
Content Management System is an application to create, edit and manage electronic content.  More specifically with Verdigrid, we offer web content management system that allows a user to manage content of their web site without requiring knowledge of HTML.

CRM
Customer Relationship Management is a system a company uses to track and organize its contacts, particularly customers and prospective customers.  Typical uses of CRM would include schedule meetings, calls, account management, order processing, campaign management, sales forecasting, billing and finance are among some of the uses of CRM.

E-commerce
Short for electronic commerce which allows buying and selling of products and services over electronic networks, more commonly, the Internet.

IP
Internet Protocol is a standard method of communicating data over the Internet.

Independent Software Vendor

Level of Support
Every company decides how they classify levels of support.  This is how Verdigrid organizes each support level:

  • Level 1 Support - Initial troubleshooting and resolution of common issues
  • Level 2 Support - Advanced troubleshooting and resolution of hardware-related issues
  • Level 3 Support - Resolution of any issues requiring assistance from the OEM 

MSP
Managed Service Provider assumes responsibility in managing a defined set of IT services billed on a fixed monthly fee, which benefits their clients by providing them with predictable IT support costs.

NOC (commonly pronounced as knock)
Network Operations Center is responsible for monitoring the performance and condition of a telecommunications network.

OEM
Original Equipment Manufacturer
OEM can also be used as an adjective to describe software licensed only for a particular system. OEM software is purchased alongside a system or hardware parts.  OEM hardware is hardware packaged for computer repackaging. These products are normally plain boxed and often don't come with any instructions or references provided in retail packages.

OS
Operating System is the system that lives in your hardware and runs your software.
Examples are MAC OS for MAC, Microsoft Windows for PC, Unix for Linux

PaaS (pronounced as pass)
Platform-as-a-Service provides hardware architecture, OS and software solution delivered as a service to simplify the cost and complexity in buying and managing the various layers in deploying IT and where the service is usually billed on a monthly basis like a utility bill.  PaaS solutions are especially beneficial to companies that have more than one location and would all need to collaborate and/or share data and resources.

Podcast
Personal on-demand broadcast, as later defined, is the streaming of digital media files made available through a web syndicated feed.  The feed is then automatically transferred to any device that is capable of playing media files (computer, mobile device, etc.)

SaaS (pronounced as sass)
Software-as-a-Service is a method that allows a user to use an application on-demand that is usually hosted on a web server, and which an application can be deployed and facilitated immediately.  Its goal is to reduce the up-front cost of purchasing software and overall investment in server hardware.  It also allows for the flexibility of being able to disable it if you no longer want to use it and add-on users anytime you need to.

Search Engine Optimization is the process by which a web site could be improved to be ranked better or found better by search engines allowing the site to increase traffic or be able to capture its specific targeted audience.

Verdigrid, the origin of its name
Specific to our company, Verdigrid was initially named to exemplify green hosting.  Verde, Spanish for green and the grid represents network or infrastructure.  While we are several years away from green hosting, Verdigrid continues to achieve green practices in IT by supporting and applying virtualization as its primary method in deploying IT infrastructure.

VoIP
Voice over Internet Protocol which is voice communications delivered over the Internet.

VoIP PBX
Voice communications over the Internet through a Private Branch Exchange.  A PBX is a telephone system that reduces the number of telephones to be connected to external lines.  By using a central switch, it allows one line with several extensions instead.

Virtualization
Very simply defined as simulation by decoupling or separating the physical computer hardware from the operating computing environment.  This very simple process allows one to efficiently utilize hardware resouces by running multiple virtual machines on one piece of hardware and the capability to move an operating virtual machine to another piece of hardware without interruption.  As a result, one can share a computer system among multiple users, allocate resources for better performance and a near-zero downtime allows one to achieve improved reliability, security and productivity.  Above all, a significant cost reduction as a result of virtualization.
